The Speech Language Hearing Sciences Department at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) has been an affiliate of the Fargo–Moorhead Sertoma Club since 1993. During this time period the local Sertoma Club has provided support in excess of $100,000.

Examples of their support are numerous including the purchase of a portable audiometric testing booth, state of the art equipment to assess hearing of children and adults, augmentative and alternative communication devices, community screening materials for preschool speech-language hearing screenings; community memory screenings; purchasing speech and language therapy for those unable to pay and financial support of the local chapter of the National Stuttering Association.

The SLHS Department continues to use these materials to positively impact the community each year. Hundreds of preschoolers receive free speech-language screenings. Graduate students carry out service learning work in area assisted living facilities to provide early identification of memory issues; hearing screenings; and education on prevention activities to promote optimal aging of memory and thinking. Hundreds of community members receive free hearing screenings at Big Iron each fall. The department distributes many Safe Ears materials as a prevention effort to educate the community on preserving their hearing from noise exposure. In addition, undergraduate and graduate students use materials with clients every day that were provided by the FM Sertoma club.

In conclusion the relationship that includes the F-M Sertoma Club, Collegiate Sertoma and the MSUM SLHS Department continues to grow. The future will offer additional opportunities to extend our community impact offering more support to individuals with speech, language or hearing needs.
